In device manager the ASUS showed up as iHBS312 with the Lite-On installed. I'm assuming ASUS uses a modified Pioneer firmware with the Pioneer BDR-209MBK that came in my ASUS BW-12D1S-U to control the tray and identify the drive as ASUS.

I use ImgBurn to burn CD/DVD/BD so that is not an issue since ImgBurn has open and close tray buttons. Good news is it does, except the eject button on the enclosure doesn't work (it will close the tray, won't open). I installed a Lite-On bluray burner into the enclosure to see if it will work. There is another small ribbon cable that operates the eject button. Those that don't like the bright LED on top of enclosure, a small ribbon cable located at rear of unit can be unplugged to turn it off. There are two hidden screws underneath the rear rubber feet.
ASUS EXTERNAL BLU RAY BURNER MAC MAC OS
This thing can be used with any desktop or laptop with Windows or Mac OS and a USB port. If the internal BDR drive is replaceable, I would recommend everyone to get one.

Overall Review: With the right software this looks to be a nice external burner. If ASUS would just use screws to hold the top and bottom halves together, things would be much simpler for the tinker like me. I like to see what's inside and be able to replace the BDR drive if necessary. Looks to be difficult to completely open up the enclosure. The included software is junk, but will get the job done. I just covered it with a piece of electrical tape. I might look into flashing the firmware with a Pioneer firmware, if ASUS is using their own custom firmware.Ĭons: That LED on the top of the enclosure is very bright.
ASUS EXTERNAL BLU RAY BURNER MAC HOW TO
It looks as though it would be pretty simple to replace the BDR drive (if I can figure out how to separate the two halves at the rear). The exterior case opens up pretty easily (except at the rear of the unit, haven't figured that out yet) and I was able to see the Pioneer drive inside (it says BDXL ate lower left corner). The drive supports BDXL, but whether ASUS supports it is anyone's guess (BDXL discs are hard to come by and expensive, last time I checked). The blu-ray drive inside my ASUS BW-12D1S-U Lite is a Pioneer BDR-209MBK. I wanted to remove my internal BDR drive so I could add another 6TB HDD for storage.
